About ESPD
Founded in 1999, the European Society for Photodermatology is the forum of communication for everyone working at the meeting point of light and skin.
Who we are
The European Society for Photodermatology brings together dermatologists, photobiologists and researchers from across Europe and beyond. Our members share a common interest in how ultraviolet and visible light affect human skin — in health and in disease.
The society exists to advance knowledge, set clinical standards, support education and training, and provide a forum where the photodermatology community can meet, collaborate and share research. ESPD is an affiliated society of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV).
President
President of the European Society for Photodermatology · Full Professor of Dermatology, University of Brescia
Piergiacomo Calzavara-Pinton is President of the European Society for Photodermatology and a leading figure in the field. A Full Professor of Dermatology at the University of Brescia, he directed the university's Dermatology Clinic and the dermatology service at the city's Spedali Civili for two decades, and led the region's specialty training school in dermatology.
His research has helped shape modern photodermatology, with particular impact in photodynamic therapy, and his influence reaches well beyond Italy. From 2016 to 2019 he served as President of the Italian Society of Dermatology (SIDEMAST), of which he is today President Emeritus. ESPD is grateful for his leadership and his enduring commitment to advancing the science of light and skin.
Our history
The European Society for Photodermatology is founded to bring together clinicians and scientists working on the interaction of light with human skin.
ESPD establishes its annual scientific congress and steadily builds a membership spanning dermatology and photobiology across Europe.
As an affiliated society of the EADV, ESPD convenes congresses, supports education and training, and advances photodermatology research.
